Discuss links between experimental and correlational research

Handout 7.3 helps introduce the idea that many of the principles that apply to experimental research also apply to correlational research. In discussing the two forms of research, the following commonalities could be stressed:
  1. The importance of having hypotheses and rationale for those hypotheses;
  2. The importance of following ethical guidelines relating to informed consent, debriefing, confidentiality, etc.;
  3. The importance of accurate measurement of variables;
  4. The value of looking for interactions;
  5. The value of determining the functional relationship between variables; and
  6. The importance of being cautious when interpreting null results.
