Discuss the problem of subject biases and strategies for avoiding subject bias

For this discussion, it might be helpful to make an overhead of Table 5-2 (page 108). Besides using classic examples such as the case of "Clever Hans," you may want to discuss more modern examples, such as facilitated communication.

You may also want to have the students devise measures of shyness, anxiety, generosity that attempt to avoid subject bias. You can do this as a group exercise, either having each group take a different construct, or having each group responsible for a different one of the eight techniques described in Table 5-2.
